Experience At School
School has been fun for Thaddeus. Though it has been the same anthem sung every other day, “I don’t want to go to school”, same days he got off the car with tears in his eyes, but definitely greeted by a big smile every time we went to pick him up. We hope the anthem fades over time and he’d be actually looking forward to going to school.
Time At School
We are very excited every time Thaddeus got up the car. We wanted to hear him story-telling us what happened in school, just like in the movies. But like some people say, with expectations, come disappointments too. The response we got from him wasn’t quite like the movies, even though we probed him further with questions. Instead it was only, “Got”, “Yes”, “No”… Somewhat lacked… excitement?
I guess being parents, it’s normal to be curious how it all went.
School sent us 2-3 video recordings and pictures of what Thaddeus did in school on the 1st week. 2nd week was only pictures… it’ll stop eventually.
He learnt, he played and… he fell sick.
Days Before School
We stayed pretty much indoors due to the pandemic. Being rather prudent, both Thaddeus and Thea are not vaccinated, we are still not as adventurous as we used to.
We still have our meals at home, we rarely ate out even when we were not with them, if we (Christine and I) craved for something, we had it either packed or delivered.
Thaddeus’ evening exercise has also been reduced to almost none since Thea came.
It has been… busy.
It Happened
We have been told by friends that “Thaddeus will fall sick” when he starts school. And it’s perfectly normal. Probably an expectation that we will not get disappointed.
It happened. He fell sick. I fell sick too. And Thea started to sneeze yesterday…
It started with fever in the evening, which subsided the following day, now he’s been coughing (no phlegm) on and off. The bug will last for a while it seems.
Call To Arms
Prevention is better than cure. We don’t think this will be the end of it when Thaddeus recovers.
The bug will be back. Not being pessimistic but, there are only some things we can control, and a lot that we can’t.
1. Exposure
I believe one thing that Thaddeus needs would be outdoor exposure. We have a beautiful field right behind of our house, planned and fitted to be an airport. Never happened though. You can see people jogging around it in the mornings, and in the evenings. On weekends, we see more family-based activities. I plan to get him out there more.
The theory is, Thaddeus could use “fresh air” with a different set of bacteria than the ones we have at home. That could help build-up his immune system.
2. Rest
Thaddeus loves to play, as much as any other kids do. But he doesn’t take his afternoon naps, and he goes to sleep late at night. He needs more rest.
3. Supplements
We have been advised to introduce supplements to help boost Thaddeus’ immune system, though I am not a believe of taking supplements myself. My take, with supplements, it gives you the extra, so that your body could work extra.
But for Thaddeus, we will be giving him:
- Vitamin C: Basic I suppose?
- Anti-Histamines: Lorsedin, 2.5ml before he enters bed, and 2.5ml before he goes to school.
- Others: We’ve been told Sambucol Kids works for some too. But, it’s costly. Open to give it a try.
Wrapping Up
It has been interesting the past two weeks! Much learnt, much understood, much change in me, patience for example, I never knew. May seem challenging, and even frustrating at first, hang in there, you’ll see it through.
